Day 10 Days of wine and Santa Rosa

Bryan had a good ride this morning, until just a few miles outside of Ukiah when he blew a shifting cable. I was there having a look around so I just retraced my steps back to pick him up. He had almost 73 km at that point but didn't lose too much time since we quickly found an experienced bike mechanic. Stuff happens! He was on his way again by 2:30, headed for Cloverdale. He would finish the day with 142 km, satisfied with the day's ride.

On another positive note, today took us through Sonoma County and the Wine Road. Orderly rows of vineyards line the highway and climb the hills. The farmer in us sympathizes with those affected by the drought in California that has set back growth. There are 200 wineries in this area so I thought that I really should stop in for a taste. I turned into the entrance of Jaxon Keys Winery near Hopland, drawn by the grand farmhouse with a wrap around veranda at the top of a hill. My hosts, Shannon and Kyla made me feel so welcome, answering my questions and suggesting wines to sample. I couldn't resist sitting on the veranda later, relaxing in one of the comfy chairs and admiring the view. No wonder so many people enjoy wine tasting tours.

This peace and quiet was a good end to my day of browsing in shops and driving. Twenty minutes later, I met up with Bryan in Geyserville and  he drove into Santa Rosa. We also found out that cyclists were actually not allowed on the 101. Information we got downtown in Santa Rosa shows us how to continue on Highway 12 to #1 along the coastline. Our experience in this "smaller" city has also reinforced for us that we will be driving through the big cities together. Bryan still hopes to cycle across the Golden Gate bridge though.

By our rough calculations we have covered 1200 km and have 1000 km yet  to go. There should be time to tour the Point Reyes area once Bryan arrives there. We plan to spend some time in San Francisco as well.
